Field Trial Recap:
We are consistently inspired by the remarkable community and wonderful dogs we have the privilege of hosting. This past weekend's field trial was a testament to our thriving community and reaffirmed that our breed is well-positioned for success in the future.
Participants journeyed from various states including Iowa, California, Colorado, Minnesota, and Utah, joining the Arizona contingent and contributing to robust attendance across the GUN and OPEN classes. We reignited old friendships and welcomed new EB owners, creating a weekend brimming with bird dogs, tales from the recent upland season, communal meals, and unforgettable moments.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to all participants and their guests. Each person readily offered assistance, ensuring smooth progress throughout the event. Additionally, we'd like to recognize a few volunteers whose efforts were instrumental in making the event possible. Ric Haulenbeck led the cold calling campaign, personally inviting many of you to attend. Dave Harris and Clint Rand served as gunners, accompanying every run. Shawn Kearney planted nearly 100 quail and acted as camp chef, feeding the group post-trial each day. Stephen Parsons lent his support by planting birds between running his dogs. Pat Rogers extended his stay to assist with transportation on his quad and provided breakfast pastries. Trisha Wherley organized and directed traffic as field marshal. The selfless attitude displayed by everyone underscores the strength of our community. While friendly competition is at the heart of our gatherings, it was noted by many that the camaraderie within the group enhanced the weekend experience.
Of course, the spotlight also shone on our canine companions, and they delivered outstanding performances. Many dogs showed growth and improvement since the October trials. Judges Hon. Josh Ruiter and Hon. Shooter Smith praised the impressive displays of bird dogs.
Results for Saturday, March 9, 2024:
Friday's rain seemed to benefit the trial by encouraging birds to hold, resulting in favorable scenting conditions on Saturday morning. Clear skies and temperatures in the upper 20s greeted us, with Open and Gun events running concurrently on separate fields. Every dog encountered multiple birds, providing ample opportunities for evaluation.

Results for Sunday, March 10:
Sunday brought cooler, drier conditions, with unpredictable winds posing challenges for both dogs and birds. This led to many tough situations, particularly with moving and coveyed birds. Every dog still had bird contact, but the conditions and few unlucky situations got the better of many.

Each day concluded with the group gathering to share a meal, recap the day, and celebrate award presentations. It was a wonderful way to end each day.
On another note, pending UKC approval, Penelope (Penny) and Smith’s Nikon Rebel (Rebel) both attained their Trialer titles. Congratulations to these deserving dogs on their achievements.
We remain grateful for the ongoing growth and positive momentum of our club. It's truly rewarding to witness the EBs of the Southwest region excelling through titles and national recognition.
See you in the field!
